Eric Enstrom shot
"Grace"
in a small Minnesota town in 1918. More than a million copies have been
sold.
Eric's twin brothers, Lars and Olaf, immigrated to Minnesota in 1892
from a small town in Sweden.
Lars had seven children, including a daughter, Alice.
Alice had two children, a son and a daughter. Howard, the son, attended
school in
Minnesota before eventually settling with his family in northern
California, where he taught journalism at the neighborhood university.
Howard had two daughters and two sons. Last week the younger son was
invited to a reunion
in Atwater (population: 1,097), an hour west of Minneapolis. Descendants of
the Enstroms, none
of whom he had ever met, had flown in from around the country and were
having a morning church service at Atwater's Swedish Lutheran church. Then
they were going to commemorate the
log cabin (still standing) in which the original family member spent his
first winter,
back in
1868.
The son couldn't find a ride, so he did
laundry
instead.
